Along with the striking beauty of mountains shooting straight out of the sea, Milford Sound is also known for its impressive waterfalls. Among the many falls in the Sound are the Bridal Veil, Stirling, and Bowen Falls which release torrents of water straight into the sea off vertical rock walls. (Click on the pictures to enlarge.)

Tongariro National Park, New Zealand's first national park, is a dramatic landscape dominated by three active volcanos. There are rolling hills covered in lush vegetation and desolate desert areas that resemble a lunar landscape. The park has many impressive waterfalls flowing with icy cold water. Shown below are the Waitonga and Tawhai Falls. (Click on the pictures to enlarge.)

Lastly, on the central North Island, there are the Huka Falls and Wairere Falls. The Huka Falls are on New Zealand's longest river, the Waikato which flows north from Tongariro National Park through Lake Taupo to the Tasman Sea. Just north of the mouth of Lake Taupo, the river hurtles through a narrow rock chasm known as Huka Falls. The Wairere Falls are outside of Rotorua in the shadow of Mt. Tarawera. At the Wairere Falls, the Wairoa Stream drops over 260 feet on its way to Lake Tarawera. (Click on the pictures to enlarge.)
